In 2016 the Norwich Philharmonic Society, one of the oldest music societies in the country, celebrates a remarkable landmark – its 175th anniversary.  To celebrate this we are presenting an extra concert to our normal season - a rare and spectacular performance of the monumental 8th Symphony by Mahler, 'The Symphony of a Thousand' It will be given before an audience of over 2,000 at the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena, as part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival on 21st May 2016 at 8pm.

The 'Symphony of a Thousand' is so-called because it is scored for a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, organ, off-stage band and 8 solo singers. Indeed it is conceived on such a large scale that the huge indoor Royal Norfolk Showground Arena is the only venue big enough to stage it, the first time an event of this kind has been held there. In addition to the musicians and singers of the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the concert will also involve other local orchestras, notably the Academy of St Thomas, and at least four other Norfolk choirs including Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus, Norwich Cathedral Choir, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, and Kings Lynn Festival Chorus.
